Anaclet Odhiambo (pictured) netted twice as Abingdon United kept alive their slim chances of making the play-offs in British Gas Business Southern League Division 1 South & West on Sat- urday.

Odhiambo opened the scoring midway through the second half after lashing home from just three yards out, and secured victory seconds from full-time.

The three points means that Abingdon are level on points with Didcot, but eight away from the play-offs.

With a swirling wind, good football was at a premium, but former Oxford United youngster Michael Alexis was denied early on by a John Ashwood save.

The visitors came back with a free-kick that Dean Moss did well to dive low and head wide of a post.

Soon after, Anthony Wright had only Simon Tricker to beat as he went clean through, but the home keeper spread himself well to deflect the ball away with his feet.

A ball into the box by Julian McCalmon was chested down by Andy Ballard, who volleyed goalwards, only for a Beaconsfield defender to block the shot.

In the second half, Abingdon dominated possession, and got their reward in the 67th minute when McCalmon twisted and turned inside the box, before his shot rebounded to Odhiambo, who made no mistake from close range.

Both sides carved out chances, Richard Peirson cheekily chipping over a defender, before sending a cross to McCalmon, whose diving header was deflected away.

Beaconsfield too caused some problems, but as they pressed forward in search of an equaliser, Abingdon secured the points.

Odhiambo was fed by McCalmon, and he calmly despatched the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.
