THE students of Oxford MCC Universities were given a sharp lesson on the opening day of their firstclass match against Worcestershire in The Parks yesterday.

Having been put into bat in grey conditions, Oxford lost their last seven wickets for 24 runs to be all out for 124.

By the close, Worcestershire were 151-2, thanks to an unbeaten half-century by skipper Daryl Mitchell.

Oxford battled hard in the morning, scoring at barely two runs an over.

While they lost Banbury’s Lloyd Sabin second ball, Lloyd Paternott offered resistance with 40 off 123 balls.

But the lower order had no answer to the left-arm seam of Jack Shantry, who returned amazing figures of 5-18 from his 18 overs.

He was given fine support by Brett D’Oliveira – grandson of England star Basil – who captured 2-23.
