Oxford United manager Jim Smith has been charged by the Football Association for the incident in which he questioned a linesman's sight by offering him his glasses.

It happened during United's 1-0 home defeat by Kidderminster Harriers on March 13.

Match referee Graham Horwood, from Bedfordshire, who dismissed Smith (pictured) to the stand for what he considered to be an insulting action, has, as expected, included the incident in his report.

And the FA have now taken action by charging the U's boss with "using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official" as per FA Rule E3.

Smith has until April 4 to answer the charge or request a personal hearing.

He told the Oxford Mail last night he was considering challenging the charge.

Although the action of offering his glasses may be seen as mickey-taking and sarcastic, the FA charge specifically relates to "abu- sive or insulting words".

"I think I am going to appeal because I didn't, as far as I remember, say anything abusive," he said. "And I've looked at it again on video.

"It won't do any good," he muttered. "But there's a very good chance I will contest it."

If found guilty, Smith would almost certainly be handed a touchline ban - something which, in his long managerial career, he has never before received.

Meanwhile, skipper Phil Gilchrist is recovering well from his back injury and stands a good chance of being fit to return for United in their Conference game against leaders Dagenham on Monday.

Young U's midfielder Josh Kennet has joined Didcot Town on a month's loan.

The 19-year-old midfielder made just one sub appearance in United's first team this season, at Exeter on New Year's Day.

He has gone straight into the Didcot squad for today's match against Paulton Rovers at Loop Meadow Stadium.
