Chairman Nick Merry will tonight miss his first Oxford United match since taking over the club after undergoing major knee surgery.

He was yesterday booked into the Manor Hospital in Headington for an operation on the knee he seriously injured as a promising United youth team player against Bristol Rovers 29 years ago.

Before going in, he said: "How ironic it is that I'm going into the hospital built on the same pitch where I suffered the injury!

"It means I won't be able to get to Southport on Tuesday, the first game I've missed all season. I can't believe how gutted I am to miss that one game!

"I will be there in spirit and will be listening to the match."
