Coneygree's success in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup proved costly for Ladbrokes’ betting shop in Wantage with punters splashing out on the local hero.

Shop manager Guy Eastgate said: “There’s been more people in the shop today than on Grand National day.

“Everyone has been in to back Coneygree and it’s been a fabulous day, we’ve paid out with a smile to say the least.

“Punters have been queuing out of the door to collect their winnings.

“The biggest bet we had was £100 win at 10-1, but it’s safe to say the whole of Wantage will be on the champers tonight."

Nigel Chamings, of Wantage-based Stan James bookmakers, said: “We were very pleased a local horse won.

“It wasn’t a bad result for the company either.”

Nationally, though, Coneygree’s win was good news for Betfred and William Hill, who were both saved from a near £3m payout when 3-1 favourite Silviniaco Conti trailed in seventh.
