ST BIRINUS had a fruitful meet at the British Schools Weightlifting Championships, claiming six gold medals and 11 overall.

Will Burchette, Robert Calking, Elias Lawton, Linford Mupeta, Ben Dickson and George Vass topped the standings for the Didcot school at Oldbury Academy.

Burchette claimed gold in the year ten 62kg class, lifting a personal best of 133kg.

Calking (year nine 77kg), Lawton (year nine 50kg), Mupeta (year nine 40kg), Dickson (year eight 69kg) and Vass (year eight 56kg) also won gold.

Year 11 Conor O’Rourke secured silver in the 62kg class, and was crowned the competition’s best lifter with a score of 358 Sinclair points – a combination of body weight and total load lifted.

His best snatch lift was 73kg, along with a 97kg clean and jerk.

Connor Day was third in the year 11 69kg class with a best snatch lift of 48kg and a clean and jerk of 70kg.

Elliot Tappin (year six 40kg) and Jack Ellis (year eight 62kg) claimed silver medals, while Cameron Tappin (year nine 62kg) won bronze.
