Grove roared into promotion contention with a 33-8 home victory over Southern Counties North leaders Amersham & Chiltern.

After a slow start to the season, they have won eight of their last nine games and are now fifth - just four points off top spot.

The victory, which preserved Grove's unbeaten record at Cane Lane, saw centre Dave Johnson bag their opening try.

Fly half Nick Sevier converted before Amersham hit back with a penalty.

Nick Sevier converted his own try to put Grove 14-3 up at half-time.

His brother, Roger, was next on the scoresheet, finishing on the wing.

Roger Sevier then ran in under the posts to give his brother an easy conversion.

Flared tempers saw Grove replacement prop Richard Keen and two Amersham players red-carded.

The visitors managed a consolation try, but Grove had the last word with Nick Sevier converting flanker Lee Wright's try.

This win meant Witney missed a chance to go top after losing 31-29 to Tadley.

Tadley took the lead with a try, but Witney opened their account when full back Johnny Wheater hit the line at a great angle and scored a fine try.

Flanker Will Worrall was next to strike from a forward drive, with Henry Lamb converting.

Scrum half Gareth Campbell stretched over for No 3 and the visitors were on the rack.

Tadley stemmed the tide with a penalty to make it 17-8 at the break and slotted a second soon after the restart.

Winger Louie Collins created a fourth try for fly half Ollie Smith and Witney looked in control.

But the momentum started to swing with a second Tadley try, followed by a converted third from a forward drive.

Lamb's interception attempt could not stop another Tadley score, which was converted.

Tadley's fly half notched the decisive try, which meant Worrall's late second, converted by Lamb, proved in vain.
