A team of Abingdon Town youngsters pulled off an unlikely Sport Italia Hellenic League Premier Division victory in their 3-1 derby victory at Wantage on Saturday.

Abingdon boss Keith Stopps was forced to field a makeshift side as half of his regular starters were either injured or unavailable.

With David Champ and Danny Thomas starring in midfield, they took the lead after nine minutes when Thomas turned and placed the ball past home keeper Shaun Purcell.

Wantage, missing regulars captain Gary Swann and keeper Terry Burton, equalised in the 24th minute when Tom Austin set up Danny Keen to score.

Abingdon regained the lead when Champ sent a perfect crossfield ball to Thomas. He fed Daryl Hutt, who turned and clipped the ball superbly past Purcell.

The game was sealed in the 78th minute when Mark Flanagan chipped Purcell.

A goal midway through the first half by Kevin Lewis proved enough to keep North Leigh top of the table witha 1-0 win at Wallingford.

A leg injury forced North Leigh's James Mortimer-Jones out of the game early on, with Danny Wise replacing him up front and Lewis dropping into a midfield role.

And it was Lewis, who struck the only goal of the game.

The ball was only half-cleared to Lewis on the edge of the box, and he scored with a low volley through a crowded goalmouth.

Before half-time, Wallingford's Danny Leggett was stretchered off with an ankle injury.N.orth Leigh's Danny Wise did have two chances after the break but was thwarted on both occasions.

His replacement, Zinzee Taha, had Wallingford's best chances, but shot weakly.

Witney United, with Mark Simms returning from Abingdon United, ended Fairford's unbeaten home league record witha 3-0 victory.

Fairford were reduced to ten men just before half-time when a collision between Neil Maskell and Ryan Whitefield ended with the latter being sent off for throwing a punch.

Witney took the lead in the 45th minute when Simms fed Kieran Davis to score.

They missed a chance to extend their lead in the second half when Chris Johnson had his penalty saved following a foul on John McMahon.

With five minutes remaining, McMahon won the ball just outside his own penalty area. On a long run, he played a one-two Simms before slotting home for an excellent individual goal.

Mark Threlfall added their third goal near the end.

Milton United made a perfect start as they scored four goals for the third successive game in a 4-1 victory at Shortwood United.

They went ahead after just 18 seconds as Darren Howell moved the ball out to Paddy Malone, who flashed through the midfield and defence to score.

Their second strike came after eight minutes. From keeper Dave Tasker's long kick, Davis crossed for Vinnie Rusher to score.

James Clarke pulled back a goal for Shortwood after 15 minutes.

After defending early in the second half, Rusher increased Milton's lead following good work by Paddy Malone.

And Howell completed their tally in the 71st minutute.

Bicester Town eased to a 3-0 win against Harrow Hill.

Midway through the first half, youngster Sam Houlihan volleyed Bicester into the lead.

In the second half, young winger Tom Roberts won a penalty, and skipper Jody McKay duly despatched at the second attempt after the keeper parried his initial shot.

Nigel Emsden rounded off the scoring from close range after the keeper again saved from Houlihan's shot.

Even the dismissal of Emmet McGovern could not prevent Kidlington ending Shrivenham's long unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory.

The only goal came in the 30th minute. A free kick from Jason Smith was lofted into the box and the ball fell to skipper Mark Baker, who made no mistake from ten yards.

This goal seemed to spur on Shrivenham, and just before the break the visitors' goalkeeper Floyd Croll had to be at his best to save a shot from Terry Moore.

McGovern departed early in the second half, following a second yellow card given for time-wasting. Jimmy Deabill also had to be replaced due to injury.

However, with James Philpott, Darren Clare and Lee Bolton in majestic form, Kidlington's ten men held on without undue alarm.

Carterton paid for a poor first half after they went down to a 2-1 home defeat against Highworth The home side improved after the break, following the introduction of Steve Knight, who equalised with his second goal in only three games since signing from Chipping Norton.

This gave Carterton a lift, but two quick corners from Highworth resulted in a winning goal with only eight minutes left.

Thame United were outclassed in a 6-1 thrashing at Hungerford, conceding three goals in each half, and manager Mark West side's are now staring relegation in the face.

The home side went three goals up in the first 17 minutes with two goals from Bradley Ward - one a deflected effort and the other a long-range effort - and one from defender Nick McCrae, Thame pulled a goal back five minutes before half-time when Simon Kitson found Nathan Jack who crossed for Paul Reading to tap in at the far post.
