Didcot Town had no answer to runaway Division 1 South & West leaders Bashley, who underlined their title credentials with an impressive 1-0 win in Saturday's top-of-the-table battle.

Bashley flew out of the blocks and almost scored in the first minute, Ryan Moss striking a post with an open goal in front of him.

Grant Goodall bravely blocked the follow-up on the goalline and the ball was scrambled clear.

Shortly afterwards Ian Concannon had a great chance to put Didcot in front but was unable to beat the on-rushing David Elm.

The only goal of the game, in the seventh minute, came out of the blue, as Richard Gillespie broke clear and thumped the ball past Didcot keeper Chris Webb.

Moss could have doubled the advantage, but Webb saved his low drive at the second attempt.

Richard Witt was outstanding on his home debut for Didcot, and he came close with a rasping drive in the that Elm did well to smother.

Gillespie's pace created another chance for Bashley that Webb did well to block just before the break.

Bashley had been the better side in the first half, but Didcot can be satisfied with a much-improved performance after the interval that could have earned them a point.

After Paul Powell brought a fine diving stop from Elm, Didcot's Jack King fired over and Witt grazed the upright with a shot from distance.

Powell had another effort from just outside the box which failed to hit the target.

At the other end, Craig Davies almost almost grabbed a second for the visitors with a near-post shot that Webb turned around a post.

Bashley held on to go 20 points clear as they inflicted a second consecutive league defeat on the Railwaymen.

While mathematically the title race is not yet over, it is inconceivable that Bashley won't be finishing top of the pile.
