Abbie Clayton notched a brace as Oxford United closed in on the Southern League Southern Division title with a 3-1 victory over Milton Keynes Wanderers.

Oxford went in front after 14 minutes when Clayton slotted home.

Milton Keynes fought back and were quickly level following some excellent play down the left.

Kelly Talbot restored the lead before half-time, and after the break, United's superior fitness and pace proved the difference between the sides.

Clayton secured the points with her second goal to put the U's out of reach.

  • UNITED'S reserves slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Chesham in Division 1 of the Thames Valley League.

Perry Jefferies put Oxford in front after ten minutes, but Chesham fought back to take the lead before half-time.

United had several chances to pull level in the second half, the best falling to Rachel Nimmo, who narrowly missed when her shot from a corner skimmed the bar.

Meanwhile, United's dev- elopment side saw off Olney 3-0 in Division 2.

After a goalless first half, United broke the deadlock after the break when a ball into Tara Lee's feet saw her swivel and shoot beyond the Olney keeper.

Laila Mendy doubled the lead when she received a well-placed pass to lob the keeper from 30 yards.

Ten minutes from time, United secured victory when Lee notched her second.
