SWIMMING: City rule the roost in sensational style

City defended their team crown in style, finishing 7791/2 points clear in the final round of the championships.

They also won the junior club title for the third year in a row with a winning margin of more than 300 points.

City returned a total 49 golds, 57 silvers and 33 bronzes, securing 32 age group records in the process.

Alex Murphy landed the men’s open 100m breaststroke in a short course county record of 1min 00.83secs.

Fabian Whitbread won his fourth title in the men’s open 200m individual medley, both swimmers clocking up the fastest times in the UK this year.

Daniel Muniz Lindoso, 16, took the junior 200m backstroke title, while City’s girls dominated breaststroke, winning 13 out of 16 possible golds.

Emily Wood, 14, won the junior 200m breaststroke title in a championship record time of 2.35.00, while Eleanor McNally landed the 50m breaststroke.

Natasha Fenton, 11, smashed the age group record on the way to victory, gaining her first national qualifying time in the process. The Bagcat awards, given to the top eight in younger age-groups, also had a strong City presence.

Dephine Little and Jacob Adams, both ten, and 13-year-old Olivia Webster all won, Webster taking the crown for the third consecutive year.

David Murphy won the 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley to make it six individual county championship crowns.

The Abingdon Vale swimmer, 15, who had already scooped four titles ahead of the final round, added to his tally with an impressive display.

Abingdon returned 39 medals, including 16 golds, with Caitlin Wheatley (200m butterfly) and Niall O’Leary (200m backstroke) also landing county championships.

Bicester Blue Fins’ Kieran Bird is the 14-year-old age group champion.

Bird rounded off an outstanding competition by winning gold in the 200m individual medley, taking his first place total to six.

Teammate Tom Thornley was second, picking up two further gold medals in the 50m and 200m backstroke.

Two sets of Witney brothers were crowned men’s 4x50m relay champions.

Sam Bark and his brother, James, as well as Callum McLean and his brother Tom won in 1min 35.96secs.
