Oxford University took the local bragging rights with a 4-2 victory away to rivals Oxford Hawks in Saturday’s South League Premier 1 local derby.

In a game featuring some excellent attacking hockey, the teams were level 1-1 at the interval, but the students ran out worthy winners thanks to goals from Rupert Allison, Thomas Chadwick, Alex Stobbart and Oliver Sugg.

The Dark Blues went ahead early on, Hawks levelling when Charlie Ellison’s short-corner flick was stopped on the line illegally by a defender.

Andy Seiman made no mistake from the penalty flick. A well-worked short corner saw the students go 2-1 up, and they added a third after a goalmouth scramble, before Ellison pulled one back.

With ten minutes remaining, Hawks squandered two short corners and were made to pay when the Dark Blues added their fourth goal from another short corner.
