OXFORD & District’s Katherine Hawes saw her bid for glory dashed in the last eight at the English Indoor Bowling Association’s Champion of Champions ladies’ national finals at Warner Lakeside, Hayling Island.

Hawes went out 21-17 to Janice Gower (Eden, Penrith) after beating Hornsea & District’s Lydia Cutmore 21-15 in the first round.

In the under 25 singles national finals, Oxford City & County’s Katie Glenn was pipped 1.1-0.1 by Megan Rolfe (Kingsthorpe, Northampton) in the first round at Loddon Vale, Basingstoke.

City & County’s Margaret Johnston, Sue Lacey and skip Jeanette Berry were beaten 19-7 by Watford skip Slyvia Ayres in the ladies’ over 50s two-wood triples inter-area final.

l OXFORDSHIRE IBA gained a thrilling 132-131 victory over Warwickshire in a friendly at Oxford City & County.

John Davie, who had been awarded his 100-game badge in Oxon’s 122-108 win over Glouc-estershire at Cotswold IBC, Stroud, three days earlier, skipped his rink to pick up three shots against Brian Humphris on the last end to snatch victory.

Davie’s nail-biting 23-22 triumph saw Oxon share the rink wins three apiece, with Mike Andrew’s four leading the way with a thumping 41-9 victory.
