OXFORD United have released their former on-loan Grays striker Jamie Slabber.

Manager Jim Smith announced the decision as the U's prepared for their FA Trophy trip to Conference South side Lewes tomorrow.

Slabber, who has also been let go by Grays, is understood to have another club chasing his signature, but if it doesn't work out there, he may still have a future at Oxford.

Smith has not closed the door completely on the former England Under 18 striker, who spent seven years as a youngster at Tottenham.

"Jamie won't be playing tomorrow, he's released," Smith confirmed.

"He's not gone back as such because he's got nowhere to go to, but he'll be signing for someone else, I presume, within the next few days."

For most players, it's the perfect scenario to join a team that's on top of the table.

But in his month at Oxford, Slabber was unfortunate to arrive just as the team were experiencing a dip in form.

He made his United debut at Gravesend & Northfleet and didn't set the world alight as Oxford went down to their first league defeat of the campaign.

A couple more brief appearances followed, but he failed to find the net.

United's manager said: "I think he's a super lad, but he hasn't had enough games and he's come to us at a bad time for somebody who's coming on loan.

"Whereas we should be firing away and helping him, we didn't do that, and didn't help him.

"He's being released for obvious reasons because we've got Marvin Robinson coming back.

"Marvin may not be fit for the Boxing Day game, but we're hoping he might be for one of the ones after that.

"What I've said to Jamie is that we want to look elsewhere for players, and the wage cap comes into play.

"But I would like to look at him again, and I've offered him the opportunity to join us for training in pre-season next year, unless he signs for someone else.

"But he's got two or three clubs who want to sign him."
