JUSTIN Burnell wants London Welsh to build on their Oxford foundations when they open their Kassam Stadium campaign this season.

The Exiles host Plymouth Albion in the Greene King IPA Championship on Saturday (2.30pm) determined to put on a show for fans new and old.

Head coach Burnell got his first taste of Kassam Stadium action in Welsh’s encouraging 16-16 pre-season draw with Llanelli Scarlets and he can’t wait for more.

“We want to really build on the foundation that London Welsh have in Oxford,” said Burnell.

“The Scarlets friendly was a brilliant afternoon.

“It was a good advert for the style of rugby that we are looking to play.

“It is all boding well. These are really exciting times.

“Our biggest contribution to getting new people into the ground is winning games and being successful.”

Welsh enter the match having won their opening two fixtures against Bedford and Nottingham, but aim to raise their game further.

“It is a good start, but what is exciting us now is being at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday,” said Burnell.

“We want to show people that Championship rugby is a good standard.

“Hopefully, we can draw in the fans by putting on a good performance. I can’t wait. It is massive for us.”

The Exiles beat Nottingham 46-19 at Meadow Lane on Sunday, which put them second in the table. Plymouth are just a point behind having beaten Jersey and drawn with Moseley.

Reflecting on the Nottingham victory, Burnell said: “It was a bonus-point win on the road, so we were pretty happy.

“That is the second game we have played and beaten one of last year’s Championship semi-final teams.

“Both our work rate and defence were fantastic.

“Our strength and conditioning department are superb.

“They are one of the best that I have worked with.”
