Oxford Hawks were unable to build on their first win of the season, against St Albans the previous weekend, as they went down 4-3 in a thriller against Whitchurch at Banbury Road North.

But the Slazenger England League National South Division's bottom team gave it everything and recovered well after going behind to an early goal.

Rhys Thomas fired Whitchurch in front in the ninth minute but Noel Magnay equalised for Hawks five minutes later.

Gareth Parker scored again for Hawks in the 22nd minute, only for Joe Naughalty to level for the Cardiff side two minutes later.

Whitchurch had a boost with James Bainbridge firing them in front just before half-time.

Yet Hawks battled back again with Parker scoring his second of the match midway through the second half.

Thomas grabbed a winner for Whitchurch with five minutes to go.
