There was good and bad news for Wallingford Rowing Club in the past week, writes Mike Rosewell.
No fewer than five of their ten-strong team won their classes in the 327-strong Scullers Head from Mortlake to Putney on Saturday.
It was the Wallingford women who really sparkled. Jen Goldsack was the fastest woman in the whole race, clocking 22mins 5secs to take the elite class.
She was just ahead of 2005 champion Matilde Pauls and a gaggle of British internationals.
Remarkably, Goldsack's clubmate, Briony Cavell, was only three seconds slower in winning the novice class.
Two more successes came for Wallingford courtesy of Andrea Dennis, the fastest women's senior 3 lightweight, and Atlanta St John, originally from St Edward's, who took the women's senior 4.
Wallingford's fifth win of the day came in the men's Veteran E, predictably from Sean Morris.
The bad news was that Wallingford were forced to cancel their popular Head of the River regatta on Sunday.
This was due to the fast-flowing state of the river following the recent heavy rain.
