Wallingford Rowing Club captured an impressive nine trophies on the Isis in the Oxford City Royal and Sprint Regattas.

A bumper entry of 227 crews from as far afield as Australia, Ireland and Wales raced over the 1,000m course on Saturday while 241 crews tackled the 500m Sprint Regatta on Sunday.

And it was Wallingford who led the way on the local front.

Their men’s novice coxed four of cox Rebecca Collier, Jack Shuttleworth, Alastair Collier, Bill Cole and Ben Colwill crossed the line first.

Richard Thwaites and Steve Hall claimed victory in the men’s novice double sculls, and Kasia Bera took the women’s novice single sculls.

At the other end of the spectrum, Charlie Newbould and Bodo Schulenburg were successful in the men’s elite double sculls.

There were victories in the mixed double sculls category for Emma and Alex Cadoux-Hudson and Caroline Greves and Chris Boddy.

Wallingford’s strong junior squad also tasted victory with sisters Lucy and Alice Walker winning the women’s junior 15 single sculls and women’s junior 18 single sculls respectively.

Ed and Rob Hares, rowing as a Wallingford/Army composite crew, completed the impressive haul of silverware with a win in men’s intermediate 1 pairs.

Green Templeton were the ‘big boat’ stars with no fewer than five wins in eights – three in the regular regatta and two more, one for their men and one for their women, in the popular lunchtime sprint eights.

The other sprint eights wins came for a composite men’s crew of City of Oxford and Corio Bay, visitors from Australia, and the HSBC women.

The Oxford-based Falcon club achieved five wins.

These included their women’s novice eight, most of whom have been rowing for only a short time and their women’s junior double scull which won an under 15s race on Saturday and an under 16 contest on Sunday. City of Oxford were hot on their heels with four trophies.

These included excellent performances in women’s junior under 14 single sculls and junior under 15 double sculls.

The older juniors from the club, having been sculling all year made the change to rowing with success in the women’s novice fours.

And the boys under 16 crew beat a strong crew from City of Cambridge in the novice fours final.

There was also success for an Oxford University composite women’s eights crew.

And Hinksey Sculling School teamed up with Pembroke College to win the intermediate 2 double sculls.
