A dramatic late winner from Abingdon sweeper David Pegg saw his side come out on top in the weekend's Oxfordshire derby, as they beat local rivals City of Oxford 3-2 at Tilsley Park in South League Division 1.

Although Abingdon had the better of the opening exchanges, it was City who took the lead after 15 minutes.

Alex Cock fired home with a well-placed strike low into the net at his side's first penalty corner.

However, their lead was short-lived as five minutes later Will Trigg equalised from the penalty spot for Abingdon after Jonny Taylor was bundled over while lining up a shot.

With two minutes left in the first half, City took the lead once more when a long ball into the circle was deflected past the flat-footed Abingdon defence by Cliff Brown.

With the last play of the half, Abingdon equalised once more. Trigg's cross to the penalty spot found Taylor, who threw himself spectacularly at the ball to force it over the line.

There were fewer chances in the second half, and with less than five minutes remaining and the match looking to be heading towards a draw, Abingdon grabbed the winner.

When a Chris Way shot at a penalty corner hit a City player's foot, the ball looped up in the air to the far post where Pegg pounced to give the defenders on the goalline no chance with a first-time strike.

In a tense finish, City earned a couple of penalty corners inside the final minute.

And it took a fine reaction save from Abingdon goalkeeper Tony Edwards to secure his side's victory, stretching out with his stick to turn an Alex Cock flick past the post.
