The Duke of Marlborough paid a visit to Combe on Sunday to help the OCA League club celebrate their 125th anniversary.

But the Royal presence wasn’t able to guide them to victory in the inaugural President’s Cup as they went down to a four-wicket defeat against Witney Swifts.

Steve Dobson (47) and Huw Neyroud (39) saw Combe reach 126, but Witney edged home at 128, thanks to a fine 60 from Charlie Fisher.

Under the rules of the ten-over seven-a-side tournament, which also featured Blenheim Park and MCS Gents, every player had to bowl apart from the keeper and no more than two overs per bowler.

Swifts reached the final by beating Blenheim Park by four wickets in the semis, while Combe defeated MCS Gents by two runs. SCORES Semi-finals: Blenheim Park 75, Witney Swifts 78; Combe 96, MCS Gents 94.

Third/fourth play off: Blenheim P 106, MCS Gents 104. Final: Combe 126 (S Dobson 47, H Neyroud 39), Witney Swifts 128 (C Fisher 61).
