Oxford United’s Katie Stanley received a gold medal at the World University Games last night after Great Britain thumped Mexico 6-2 in the women’s football final.
Britain twice came from behind to equalise in the first half and the score was still 2-2 heading into the final ten minutes.
But a strong finish saw them overwhelm Mexico, scoring four times to take the title in style.
Stanley was an unused substitute, but the 24-year-old winger made three appearances earlier in the competition, held in Kazan, Russia.
There was double delight for the U’s, with coach Luke Taylor among the backroom staff.
Stanley was eligible for the Games after studying in the United States last year and started two of the three group games, helping Britain beat Brazil 2-0 in the opener, before scoring in a 5-1 win against Estonia.
She featured from the bench as Ireland were mauled 8-0 in the quarter-finals, before sitting out a 1-0 success over Brazil in the last four.
Before last night’s success, Britain had only won one bronze at the Games, in swimming.
