EDDIE Pepperell insists a place in the star-studded climax to the season in the Middle East is not his focus despite breaking into the all-important top 60.

The Abingdon golfer’s tie for 12th place at the Scottish Open on Sunday lifted him into 60th place on the European Tour's money list.

It is the joint highest position of his season so far and if the 22-year-old could finish the season in the same position it would qualify him for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Qualification for the £5.3m event would represent a stunning season for the rookie.

The Frilford Heath golfer believes he is capable of reaching the finale, but with several months of the season remaining, he is not getting carried away.

“It would be great to play in the Race to Dubai events at the end of the year, but I’m not focused on it,” he said.

“I have about six events before it finishes and I’m just trying to play as many good rounds as I can.

“I feel like I’ve improved and I believe I can finish in the top 60, but for me it’s just about playing well.”

Pepperell picked up 24 birdies in Scotland, just one fewer than winner Phil Mickelson.

The difference was too many dropped shots, which also hindered his progress in the previous fortnight.

Despite missing the cut in France and finishing joint 22nd in Ireland, Pepperell is encouraged.

He said: “I’ve had some good moments, but there were also some times where I feel I really struggled.

“I holed enough putts in Scotland to have won the tournament, but I also made a lot of errors.

“I felt I could’ve been in the top ten of all three events and I’m turning up now believing in my game and that I’ll have a chance to contend.

“I’m seeing good signs.”

While the eyes of the golfing world are on Muirfield for The Open this week, Pepperell is unlikely to watch a single shot.

After missing out in qualification earlier this month the rising star will be relaxing on holiday in Italy.

He said: “I wanted to go away straight after the Scottish Open and it just happened to be the week of The Open.

“I like watching it and I would have done if I was at home, but I’m looking forward to doing some travelling.”
