OXFORD Cavaliers became the first side this season to win at Somerset Vikings as they cemented their place at the top of the West of England League table.

Fotu Topou, Wes Newton and Adam White led the way with a brace of tries each, while Stewart Hannah also touched down to give Oxford a 42-24 victory at Bridgwater in their penultimate match of the season.

The match was played in four quarters due to the scorching temperatures and it was Oxford who coped with the conditions better.

They took the lead after five minutes when Topou barged over.

Cavaliers doubled their lead soon after as Hannah found a gap in the Vikings defence, and with captain Newton adding Oxford’s third try just before the first interval, they were well and truly in command.

However, Somerset came roaring back after the drinks break with three converted tries of their own to make it 18-18 at half-time, capping a remarkable first 40 minutes.

Oxford regrouped at the interval and Newton edged them back in front with his second try.

White then scored a quick brace as the visitors dominated.

Topou finished the scoring with a spectacular solo effort, running 30 metres and powering through two tackles to the line.

White duly converted to complete a perfect afternoon with the boot and extend the Cavaliers’ winning run to three games.

They will be aiming to go out with a bang in their final game at home to Cheltenham Old Patesians this Saturday, when victory will ensure the league title.
