CRAIG Chalmers is tipping the British & Irish Lions to achieve a series whitewash in Australia.

Former Scotland fly half Chalmers, who is Chinnor RFC’s new head coach, was part of the Lions’ squad who won Down Under in 1989. On that occasion, the Aussies lost 2-1, but this time Chalmers, 44, is confident the Lions can go one better.

“I didn’t expect them to be challenged that much in the state games – they should have won every one of them,” he said.

“But I have no doubt they will win the first Test.

“It is whether they can get it all done and dusted in two.

“I think they will probably go and win it 3-0.”

Chalmers is taking in the 2013 tour and playing for the Classic Lions in a charity match against their combined Australia and New Zealand counterparts.

He believes that the Lions have the personnel to shine, especially with the Wallabies not going to be at full strength.

“They have a strong squad and there is not a lot that is standing in their way,” said Chalmers.

“Especially with Australia’s injuries in the forwards where they are missing guys like David Pocock and Scott Higginbotham.

“That is an area where they will really need to be very strong.

“Australia have got good backs and can cause real problems, but I don’t think they will get enough of the ball.”

Chalmers formally retired from playing while at Melrose in 2005 before going on to coach them.

But he is donning his boots and taking to the field again today for the Classic Lions against Classic ANZACS – a combined Australia and New Zealand side.

The match, which raises funds for armed forces charities, takes place at Ballymore in Brisbane.

Classic Lions include recently-retired players such as England’s Lewis Moody.

Chalmers said: “I am looking forward to it and it should be a great occasion.”
