Great & Little Tew’s brilliant first season in Division 2 West continued with a convincing seven-wicket defeat of Dinton on Saturday.

Superb seam bowling by skipper Andy Harris, Liam Manley and Matt Woods shot out the visitors for just 90, and Joe White saw the league newcomers to the brink of victory.

Tew now stand second in the league, just two points behind Oxford.

Having excelled in the first five games of the campaign, which were played on a 100 limited-overs basis, Tew were tested over the longer 110-over format – and were not found wanting.

With rain forecast, Tew’s decision to bowl first soon paid dividends.

Manley and Woods took a wicket apiece as Dinton struggled to 9-2 in the seventh over.

This set the tone for the innings – regular wickets and a slow run rate.

By lunch, the tireless Woods had bowled 17 overs into a very strong wind, conceding just nine runs.

Manley had disposed of the rest of the top order – including former England star Darren Gough’s son Liam – with 4-40 from his 14 overs as Dinton were struggling on 52-5 from 34 overs.

Rain came at lunch and caused the game to be reduced, leaving 20 overs remaining in the first innings. Dinton tried to come out aggressively and score quickly.

But Harris had an answer with the third ball after lunch, removing top-scorer Alister Gibbins with a well-directed bouncer. The rest of the batsmen then succumbed to the penetration of Harris (5-26) and accuracy of Woods who finished with 1-24 from 24 overs, which included 11 maidens.

Tew lost Harry Smith early in their reply, but a partnership of 76 between White, whose made 49 of 56 balls and Ed Gross put Tew on course for a convincing win.
