Katie Stanley is dreaming of taking on Brazil next month after being called up to Great Britain’s women’s under 23 squad for the World University Games in Russia.

It is the first time an Oxford United Ladies player has gained international recognition at such a high level.

Stanley, who turns 24 later this month, will also take part in an England training camp before leaving for Kazan, which is 450 miles east of Moscow, on June 29.

She is eligible for the games due to studies in the United States at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut, which finished in December.

The Thame-based winger later impressed during a trial in March and England scouts watched her play in United’s a 3-0 win over Swindon Town last month.

She is in good company, with three FA Women’s Cup-winners in the 20-strong GB squad, who will face group games against Brazil, Japan and Estonia.

Stanley is thrilled with the prospect of taking part in the 27th edition of the summer games, which will feature an estimated 13,500 athletes from 170 countries.

She said: “I didn’t really expect to get this far, so I’m just delighted.

“It’s a bit nerve-racking as well, because I’ve never had an international call-up, but it’s really exciting.

“The whole set-up in Russia looks amazing, we’ll be staying in an athletes’ village and there are opening and closing ceremonies.

“We’re playing Brazil as well which is fantastic – it’s all a bit surreal.”

The club will also have a second representative on the trip, with strength and conditioning coach Luke Taylor selected as part of the backroom staff.

It marks the latest step forward for United’s ladies side, who won the South West Combination League title and reached the FA Women’s Cup fifth round for the first time.

The achievements helped their successful bid to join the expanded Women’s Super League from next year, alongside the likes of Aston Villa, Sunderland and Reading.

Richard Blackmore, United’s youth and community trust manager, said: “It’s a great achievement to have someone representing Great Britain, Katie’s done really well since she came to us in January.

“With Luke going as well, it reflects really well on the club.”
