CHERWELL LEAGUE - MATCH OF THE DAY

WITNEY Mills have not enjoyed a season in which they have won more Cherwell League matches than they lost since 2000, when they captured the Division 3 title.

But their excellent start to the 2013 season in Division 4 suggests that record is about to change.

On Saturday they walloped Wallingford by nine wickets to collect their third win from three starts this summer.

This is already more victories than they managed while being relegated from Division 3 last term.

Mills’s mercurial left-arm seamer Pierre Lefort produced a man-of-the-match performance as the home side succumbed for 94.

Club stalwart Rob Sessions was the only batsman to break the shackles, top-scoring with 45, while Lefort was well supported by Ben Madden (4-38).

The Mills openers – Will Sterio (43no) and Pete Claridge (39) – suffered few alarms in getting their side almost home, and the game was all over before 4.30pm.

Wallingford have some talented crickets in brothers Warren and Lee Ainsworth, all-rounder Mark Carey and the dependable Sessions.

Since their move to Blewbury last year, they also have the facilities to attract more talent and start climbing the league.

But on Saturday’s showing they have more work to do if 2013 is to be their year.
