Malcolm Rose celebrated his 40th birthday by smashing the long-standing Oxonian club 30-mile time trial record by almost two minutes.

Conditions were ideal as Rose clocked 1hr 4mins 39secs to gain third place overall in the Hertfordshire Wheelers event on the fast F1/30 course. He was also the fastest veteran.

Rose’s time beat the previous club mark of 1.06.27 set by John Baldwin way back in 1993.

The record will be ratified at the club’s next committee meeting.

A thrilled Rose (pictured) said: “It’s been a fantastic birthday weekend.

“The family have spoilt me and then to do pb for a 30-miler and get the club record is just the perfect end to a great weekend. “I owe a big thank you to my wife Dawn.”

It is the second Oxonian record to have been broken in a month after Matt Rowley smashed the ten-mile mark.

Fellow Oxonian Paul Allday, riding his first ‘30’, clocked 1.14.56 The event was won by Anthony Stapleton in 1.03.16.

Four Oxonians rode the Fairly United Cycle teams open ten at Witney.

Steve Parfitt was the fastest of them with a 24.46, followed by Gavin Tillson (25.28), James Hunt (26.16) and Dennis McSweeney (28.11).
