Banoffee will bid to give East Ilsley trainer Hughie Morrison a first Classic success after being supplemented to run in the Investec Oaks at Epsom on Friday.

The three-year-old filly will take her chance after her owners – headed by Michael Kerr-Dineen – splashed out the £30,000 required to add her to the field.

Morrison, who went agonisingly close to winning the Group 1 contest last year when Shirocco Star was beaten a neck by Was, will be hoping to go one better with Banoffee, who is a general 8-1 chance after winning her two career starts.

He reported that the filly, who is due to be ridden again by Kieren Fallon, had been ticking over following her Cheshire Oaks win.

“She only ran two weeks ago and I don't want to over-work her, she proved how good she was at Chester,” he said.

Lyric Ballad, another of Morrison’s three-year-old fillies, called the tune at Sandown.

Silvestre de Sousa piloted the daughter of Byron home by three and a quarter lengths from Three Choirs in a nine-furlong handicap.

Wantage-based jockey Cathy Gannon starred in front of the Channel 4 cameras with victory aboard Van Percy at Haydock.

Trapped in a pocket on the rail in a mile-and-a-half handicap, Gannon extricated the Andrew Balding-trained gelding in the nick of time to pip Blue Wave by a nose.

The Irish-born rider said: “I was lucky to get the gap when I did. He would have been a very unlucky loser, but it’s great it worked out my way.”

Rosso Corsa made it third time lucky when opening his account for West Ilsley trainer Mick Channon at Chester.

The two-year-old ran on well for Martin Harley to bear Rizal Park by half a length in a six-furlong maiden stakes.

Channon commented: “We’ve always thought he was a nice horse, but he’s taking time in coming right.”
