GARY Elkins has decided to call it a day as manager of Evo-Stik Southern League club Didcot Town.

Elkins, 47, said that work commitments meant he had no choice but to step down after one season, although he will be still involved with the Railwaymen.

An announcement on his successor is expected later this week.

“I spoke to the chairman (John Bailey) last week and we came to an agreement,” said Elkins.

“With all my work commitments, it was impossible to devote the time I needed to run the team.

“The club asked me if I would stay on in some capacity and I said ‘absolutely.’ “It was a decision I didn’t want to have to make because I have loved every minute of being manager here.”

He added: “I still want to have a major role at the club – I want to help develop Didcot Town.

“I aim to assist the first-team manager and to build on what has been done here. I want a re-look at the youth and reserve sides.

“The club want me to play a part in that.”

Elkins said he had a number of good memories from his time at the helm.

“The highlights were the emotions attached to the FA Cup run where we beat Maidenhead and the FA Trophy where we ran Dorchester close,” he said.

Elkins has not ruled out a return to management at a later date.

“If I could get the work situation sorted out then I would definitely consider coming back,” he added.

Didcot ended last season 17th in Division 1 South & West.
