CHRIS Wilder was made the favourite to take over at Sheffield United by two bookmakers yesterday.

The Oxford United boss was a 20-1 shot on Monday, but was cut as short as 1-10 with Bet Victor yesterday afternoon.

Wilder, who accepted a new 12-month contract with United less than two weeks ago, made 127 appearances for the Blades in two spells during his playing career.

It is understood Sheffield United’s board met yesterday to discuss their options in the wake of their League One play-off semi-final defeat to Yeovil Town on Monday.

The 45-year-old Wilder, who was linked to the Blades in December 2011, was also made favourite for the Coventry City job in similar circumstances by bookmakers last September, but it proved to be just speculation.

Wilder is now the seventh longest serving manager working in the top four divisions of English football.

The U’s boss, who has been in charge since December 2008, moved up a place yesterday following Kenny Jackett’s resignation at Millwall.
