Oxford United legend Mickey Lewis has been appointed first-team coach of Southern League side Abingdon United.

Lewis, who played, coached and managed at Oxford, has been out of football since he was controversially pushed out as coach at Coca-Cola League 1 side Doncaster Rovers earlier this season.

One of his first jobs will be to sort out a defence that has conceded 13 goals in their last two outings. Saturday's 8-4 FA Trophy drubbing at Hemel Hempstead was followed by Tuesday's 5-2 defeat against Burnham.

Abingdon boss Andy Slater, whose side host Division 1 South & West high-fliers Swindon Supermarine, says his players need to toughen up.

"On Tuesday, all five goals were down to individual mistakes, said Slater.

"They were schoolboy errors. We need to get back to basics. We're a young side and I think we have been a bit naive.

"It was a bit of a baptism of fire for Mickey on Tuesday! But it is fantastic to have him on board. He has got a lot of enthusiasm and a wealth of experience from the professional game."

Abingdon will be without Andy Ballard (unavailable), though Peirson and Ryan Brooks return.

Oxford City's boss Justin Merritt has told his players that they must start performing or get the boot.

Merritt, who will be without Lewis Craker (suspended) at leaders Bashley said all the side would start with a clean slate.

"Some players are getting seven-out-of ten one week and four-out-of-ten the next.

"I think last week's defeat (they lost 5-1 at home to Hillingdon) was a real shock to the system. But it identified some of our weaknesses.

"Everybody is going to have an opportunity and if they are not doing their jobs we will get other people in."

They have a doubt over Danny Keen (ankle). Andy Marriott has signed for Hungerford Town.

Merritt added: "We have played Bashley twice already this season, so we know where their threats are."

Didcot Town will be without Danny Campbell (chest infection) and Dave Green (tight hamstring) as they look to extend their unbeaten away run to 20 games.

On-loan Oxford United defender Andrew Gunn, Ian Concannon and Grant Goodall could return, though there are doubts over Jamie Brooks (groin) and Paul Powell (leg).

Ollie Stanbridge (groin) and Jon Gardner (back) face fitness tests ahead of Banbury United's trip to Northwood in the Premier Division.

They are already without Ady Fuller (groin), Neil Lazarus (ankle) and Chris Jackson (groin).
