Chris Dettmar starred as Headington Road Runners stayed top of veterans men’s Division 1 in the Apex Sports Chiltern League after round three at Slough.

Dettmar was the first vet 40 man home, completing the 8.5km course in 29mins 6secs for 20th place in the division.

Headington’s Simon Taverner ran 31.23 to come second in the vet 50 category.

Double Oxfordshire cross country champion Steve Naylor had to be content with second place overall.

The 33-year-old Bedford & County athlete, from Woodstock, won round one at Shotover, Oxford, beating Alex Tovey (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow).

But this time, he clocked 26mins 30secs, finishing 17 seconds behind winner Tovey.

He and Tovey are neck and neck in the standings.

Darrell Bellinger (Oxford City), the defending senior men’s Division 1 champion, was fourth in 27.19.

City’s Stewart Thorp was the first vet 60 home in 32.40.

BICESTER’S David Kuester was the second vet 65 athlete in the MMTG Christmas Throwers Pentathlon at Moorways Stadium, Derby, Kuester scored 3,110 points, with Derby’s Barry Hawksworth (3,880) winning.
