Tere were celebrations at Wallingford Rowing Club’s after their women's junior quad took one of the top honours at the seventh annual Oxfordshire Sports Awards, held at the Kassam Stadium in Ox-ford.
After a year of incredible sporting achievements, competition was fierce.
But Wallingford’s oarsome foursome of Hannah Whelan, Freya Dale, Leanne Reeves and Alice Walker, beat Banbury Under 13 girls cricketers and Cherwell’s junior triathletes Team to become the junior sports team of the year.
The quad made it on to the shortlist after a fantastic year of consistent achievements.
They remained undefeated at a local, national and international level while balancing training with their GCSEs and contributing overall to the club. The girls have had great success at local rowing events but also went onto win six key national and international events, including National Schools Regatta, Henley Wo-men’s Regatta and the GB v France match.
Other rowers who joined them on the winners’ podium were 2012 Olympic gold medallist Andy Triggs-Hodge and cox to the 2012 Para-lympic gold LTA mixed four, Lily van der Broecke, who won sportsman and sportswoman of the year respectively.
Elsewhere Wallingford’s rowersalso took part in the Great Britain trial in Boston this weekend despite some aspects of it cancelled due to bad weather.
Wallingford’s Winter Head meet, due to be held this Sunday, has been cancelled.
The river breached its banks in Wallingford on Friday and has continued to rise since. The car parking and boating areas are underwater.
