Berinsfield's Chris Murphy scored the fastest recorded goal in Oxfordshire football and now wants a plaque put up to mark the achievement.

The 21-year-old made history in the 7-0 win away to Kidlington Reserves in the Oxfordshire Inter-mediate Cup.

Spotting the Kidlington keeper well off his line at the kick-off, Murphy fired the ball from the centre circle straight into the empty net.

It was originally thought the goal came in three-to-four seconds.

But when Murphy re-enacted the event for the Oxford Mail at Kidlington FC along with match referee Drew Warren from Witney, it was timed at around 5.5secs on the official’s stopwatch.

This is still the fastest ever goal in a senior match in the county.

Oxfordshire FA chief executive Ian Mason confirmed: “We have checked the records and it is the fastest in an Oxfordshire football match.”

“I reckon it was a little quicker than that, but it’s still pretty good,” said Murphy, who works for AWBS builders merchants of Oxford.

“There should be a plaque put up in the Kidlington clubhouse, just to remind them,” joked the striker, who was quite unfazed when it happened.

“I didn’t really celebrate, because I could see it was going to happen,” he explained.

“I spotted Kidlington goalie on the edge of the 18-yard area and told my teammates to tap the ball to me, and I struck it into the goal.

“Nobody could quite believe it.”

Warren said: “I was very surprised, but he hit it great and it was a great goal.”
