RESIDENTS in the Vale are being asked to help decide the future of public spending.

The district council put a survey on its website asking for feedback on spending including housing, the arts and particularly the new two-hour free parking scheme.

The survey asks residents what changes they would like to see in spending, in light of a 10 per cent drop in funding from central Government.

Council leader and cabinet member for finance Matthew Barber said: “With less funding coming from the Government each year, coupled with the ongoing economic problems, it is important we continue to be robust in how we manage our spending.”

The district council has an average yearly income of about £14m, made up of around £6m from central Government, £6m from council tax and just under £2m from investments.

However, funding from Government for 2012/13 is down £84,000 from last year, and £680,000 from 2010/11.

The district council pays for waste and recycling collection, parks and open spaces maintenance, licensing and planning.
