A COUNCIL is hoping a scheme to get people building their own homes will start to make a dent in its waiting list.

Cherwell District Council says it is months away from starting work on 250 new affordable homes across Banbury and Bicester.

The names of sites have now been released for the Build! project. Those who take part renovate or decorate properties – training is provided – and in return get discounts on the sale price or rent.

People are being urged to register an interest as the council announces the full list of the first sites to be developed.

The council’s housing waiting list stands at more than 3,800.

Cherwell’s lead member for housing Debbie Pickford said: “The level of involvement depends on the ambition and the skills that those taking part have.”

Anyone interested can attend an informal workshop this month and next. To book call the Build! team on 01295 221615 or view http://www.cherwell.gov.uk/build
