A hotel and shops could be built on the site of the current Headington Co-op supermarket.

Planning documents show that Travelodge has expressed an interest in taking over a proposed 108-bedroom hotel in London Road in Oxford.

The Midcounties Co-op said in December 2020 that it had sold the building and that it could be demolished.

Oxford-based property developer, Cantay Estates Ltd, is seeking permission to demolish the existing shops and to replace them with a new five-storey building containing retail space and room for a hotel.

Initial designs for the site proposed a six storey building, but that was reduced following consultations with Oxford City Council.

The application, which was submitted last month, has received a number of complaints based on the effect the building will have on the 'character of the area, the effect on the traffic, the effect on the pollution in the area, as well as a 'general dislike' for the proposal.

A shop would be based on the ground floor, part of which would also being used for the hotel.

The Co-op has indicated it would wish to trade out of the smaller building and still accommodate the post-office if planning permission is granted.

The other four storeys above that would be used by the hotel, which would have 108 rooms, including six for disabled guests.
