Banbury Borough’s Calvin Carpenter completed a full set of Oxfordshire Bowling Association titles by capturing the pairs crown with AJ Docherty at South Oxford.

The duo triumphed 20-18 against Headington’s Shaun Claridge and Mark Charlett in the most exciting of the day’s finals.

Having taken the lead at nine ends and looking comfortable at 19-9 with only five ends left, the Borough pairing saw their opponents shorten the jack length and collect nine shots over four ends to cut the deficit to one shot.

A misplaced shot when holding two sliced the jack away from the well-placed Headington woods, and Carpenter’s third bowl was sufficient to take the title, which was Docherty’s first.

The day started with Claridge skipping his Headington side of twins Dean and Gary May plus Remy Clanfield, to a 27-18 victory over Mark Sykes’s Banbury Borough rink of Geoff Gray, George and Greg Moon in the fours final.

Gray, who came in as replacement in the first round, was playing in the first final of his long career.

And qualification for the National Championships, being held at Worthing for the last time, saw Gray awarded with his full Oxfordshire badge by county deputy president Mike Andrew.

The triples saw Charlett and Claridge opposite each other in an all-Headington final.

And it was Charlett, teaming up with John Nicholls and Jason King, who ran out 19-5 winners after 16 ends over Claridge, Jon Philpott and Ian Snowdon.

Banbury Central’s George Schwab repeated his 2009 Under 25 singles success, this time 21-14 against Carterton’s Dan Wakeman, who finished runner-up for the second successive year.

Sykes gained a measure of revenge by retaining his two-wood singles title with a 16-11 win over Gary May, who had tasted victory against the Banbury man in the morning’s fours.

The singles title went to Banbury Borough’s Richard Redford, who received a walkover with Oxford City & County’s Paul Comley on holiday.
