I like to think that most of us are familiar with words such as please, thank you and excuse me.

And if we are walking along a street and find ourselves heading towards someone else, we will generally move aside to let him or her pass.

If we find ourselves behind an older person we will probably wait until they walk to the left or right, before moving past them. We may even go as far as a polite cough to let them know that we are there.

So generally speaking, as a species we are polite, courteous and considerate to people that we come into contact with while on foot.

Then why is that so many people turn into red-eyed, angry and impatient lunatics when they get behind the wheel of a car?

On more than one occasion I have been in the outside lane of a dual carriageway overtaking lorries or slower moving cars doing 70mph or thereabouts, only to find that I have one of those typical dull-witted BMW or Audi drivers practically hanging from my rear bumper.

I think the dealerships for these particular cars must have a special clinic where they remove most of the brain of new owners before they are allowed to drive away Now I won’t be bullied into travelling any faster than I need to, just because the person behind me has compensated for an obvious lack of genitalia by driving a big car.

But people of a more timid nature could easily be frightened into making a dangerous mistake.

And what about the morons that insist on inching their way forward to stop you entering from a slip road?

A couple of weeks ago on the A34, I indicated to turn right and found myself alongside a car keeping pace with me.

I tried to get ahead in order to make my manoeuvre but he speeded up, I couldn’t slow down as I had a car directly behind me. Consequently, the whole of the slip road almost came to a standstill, I’m still trying to figure out what he was getting from this?

Why can’t we make a law that any driver found guilty of being a road hog or bully should wear one of those electronic dog collars?

Then every time they got too close to the car in front a sensor would zap them in the neck with a few volts – just enough to remind them of their manners!
