WHILE we all know mistakes will inevitably be made in an organisation as big as the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust, the sheer amount revealed today is shocking.

Nearly two-thirds of consultants surveyed saw potentially harmful errors or near-misses at work – in just one month.

We hope staff seeing these problems are reporting them to managers, so they can be logged and dealt with properly.

It is just the latest in a series of issues the trust has faced recently – including bed-blocking, budget cuts and staff shortages.

Our hospitals, as well as other services, must brace themselves for more scrutiny as austerity measures begin to bite.

But as the cuts hit further we wonder how our hard-pressed and stressed hospital staff will cope while the public is assured they are getting value for money and the quality of service they deserve.
