Having taken a sabbatical from quizzing during the winter, and handed a bye in the opening round of fixtures a fortnight ago, the Bell (Lower Heyford) were, unsurprisingly, a touch ring rusty as they encountered near neighbours, the Bletchingdon Nomads, last Thursday.

However, superbly marshalled by new skipper and avid Oxford United supporter ‘The Big Harro’, the Heyford posse (although most of them actually hail from Kirtlington) came within touching distance of landing the spoils, just being edged out by their spirited opponents, 63-62.

A pulsating contest which went down to the final pair of questions, this win for the Nomads was their first ever over this opposition.

The unstoppable machine that is the Royal Sun (Begbroke) continues to brush aside all challengers. Winners of the West Division in the last two winter campaigns, they followed up their excellent result over Premiership high-flyers, the Royal Blenheim (Oxford City), with another triumph, this time at the expense of the White Hart.

In fact, the visitors from Eynsham had begun very brightly, opening up a nine point advantage by the end of round two. The Royal Sun clawed their way back into the game though and eventually prevailing by 67-61 and are now the only team in Section One with two wins from their two starts.

Uncle Rupert was back on duty last week, putting his relaxed yet authoritative skills to the test whilst reading the questions for the Ploughman’s Bunch! (Wolvercote) against the Blue Boar (Chipping Norton).

These two combatants have rarely met but it’s great to have ‘Busby’s Babes’ participating in their first summer season and they acquitted themselves well despite losing 63-76.

Whilst the Bunch! were notching up victory number two, their housemate, the Plough, was doing likewise over in Botley. Their hosts, the Seacourt Bridge, produced a creditable performance but perished 64-84.

The Green Road Club (Kidlington) bounced back from their opening day blues by beating the North Oxford Conservative Club (Summertown) 75-62.

In the one other tie of the night, the Royal Blenheim battered Black Swan (East Oxford), 73-48. The vanquished are having a torrid time of it and perhaps the bye they have in two days time will provide a good opportunity to regroup and come out all guns blazing next time out. Only problem is it’s the Plough next time out. Time to recall Burkey?

There are some intriguing matches in prospect on Thursday, the pick of which looks to be the Green Road versus the Bunch! Could there be an upset in the offing? Probably not at the Plough where the Con Club look to have a mountain to climb and it could be a similar fate for the White Hart at the Royal Blenheim.
