STAFF in the laboratories of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will celebrate all things biomedical science later this month to promote the positive work they do.

Representatives from different disciplines of the science will give talks and demonstrations to students and the public during a self-styled Biomedical Science Day on Thursday, September 20.

There will be displays and discussions from all Biomedical disciplines, including a virtual reality immunology game, microscope slides of bacteria and tissue, and discussions on the varied work we do.

Senior biomedical scientist in the Microbiology Department at the trust, Simon Evans, said: “The aim is to highlight how our profession produces the data on which doctors, consultants and surgeons base their diagnoses to plan a patient’s treatment.

“We also want to engage with local students in the hope of producing future Biomedical Scientists.”

Biomedical Scientists focus on how cells, organs and systems function in the body.

School children from across the county have been invited along, while members of the public and staff are also welcome.

The event, which will celebrate and promote the importance of laboratory science in healthcare, will showcase displays in the foyer (the corridor between the Women’s Centre and main hospital) on level three of the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford between 11am and 3pm.
