A COMMUNITY group to combat loneliness among the elderly is holding a farewell summer event to raise money for a Christmas party.

The Hands on Social Group, for over 60s, is opening its doors on Saturday for a barbecue at the Richard Benson Hall on Cowley Road.

Tables cost £15, with table top sales of various goodies, a raffle, games, a quiz and socialising also on offer.

Organiser Lucille Johnson said: "It's just going to be a lot of things going on - people talking about what they want to add to the group when we return and what they want to have at the Christmas party.

"It will be a lovely day and there will be loads of new people from East Oxford - it'll be a fun time.

"We have young volunteers, there will be loads going on."

The group, which started in Littlemore five years ago but has since moved to Cowley, hold weekly events, which include homemade food, conversation and social events for elderly members.

They also hold a quiz once a month.

Mrs Johnson continued: "I started this group in memory of my father-in-law Ben Johnson, a prisoner of war, and grandad George King. Both had post traumatic stress disorder and were so isolated when they went back to their country.

"People don't have to be lonely. Everyone, no matter who you are, can come along and socialise."

The group is looking for new members, at £15 a year. Weekly events - also open to non-members for £6 - cost £5. The next meeting will take place in September.
