THE former head gardener of an Oxford college and the superintendent of the city's University Parks will be giving a talk about his life later this month.

Walter Sawyer has been a supernumerary fellow at Wolfson College since 2001.

He started work at the Parks Department in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1972 and studied horticulture at Askham Bryan College in York.

He first came to Oxford as part of a course in 1980 and worked at the Botanic Gardens.

Two years later he became Wolfson College's head gardener and remained in that post until 1991, when he was appointed the University Parks' superintendent. He stayed in that post until last year.

His talk will be held as part of Wolfson College's Old Wolves events in the Leonard Wolfson Auditorium on Thursday from 1.30pm. There is no charge for a ticket and booking is not required.
