A MEMORIAL to Oxford volunteers who fought in the Spanish Civil War will be unveiled in two weeks.

The granite monolith will honour 26 people with links to the city who joined the International Brigade and fought against the forces of General Francisco Franco in the conflict from 1936 to 1939.

Planning permission was granted in February for it to go on the grassy eastern corner of South Park.

The International Brigade Memorial Trust, which campaigned for the monolith, said it would hold a series of events before the unveiling on June 10.

This includes a panel discussion at the Oxford Quakers Meeting House, in St Giles’ on June 9 featuring the leading Spanish Civil War expert Professor Paul Preston and Professor Valentine Cunningham, editor of The Penguin Book of Spanish Civil War Verse.

Richard Baxell, the memorial trust’s chairman, and Carmen Negrin, granddaughter of Juan Negrin, the last Prime Minister of the Spanish Republic, will also be on the panel.

On June 10 there will also be a music and dance concert in West Oxford Community Centre, Botley Road, at 7.30pm. It will feature a 20-piece Cuban band. Tickets will cost £20 on the door.
