BETTY Atkins, a former Wallingford town councillor, has been appointed an Alderman.

She was elected by the town council to the honorary role at the mayor-making ceremony last Monday.

Mrs Atkins, 80, served as a town councillor for 25 years after first being elected in 1991 and stood down from the council in November last year for health reasons.

The mother-of-three was Mayor of Wallingford in 1998, 2003 and 2007, and in 2005 was awarded the MBE for services to the community.

Mrs Atkins has lived in the town since 1976.
