PLANS for a 140-bed hotel in the heart of Oxford will finally be decided on today after hundreds of objections and three different sets of plans.

The proposals for a £30m hotel on the corner of Paradise Street and St Thomas’ Street have been recommended for approval at tonight’s Oxford City Council west area planning committee.

The scheme was first put forward in 2015 and included a restaurant and microbrewery next to the proposed hotel on the site of the former Brewery Gate pub and Old Horse Hospital – which date back to the 1800s.

A Save the Brewery Gate campaign group was set up and developers Dominvs withdrew their plans.

But a second sets of plans saving the two historic sites was met with similar public discontent and led to a third smaller hotel being put forward, which was last week recommended for approval by planning officers.

The campaign group’s leader James Ross said there were still ‘unresolved’ problems.

He said: “We are sure councillors making this important decision will take all the facts into account carefully, including the sensitivity of the site, the historic opportunity available in redeveloping it.

“There are also multiple unresolved problems including excess height, light loss and unmanageable traffic, and the overwhelming weight of the public opinion expressed.”

Councillors will decide on the plans at a meeting in The Old Library at the Town Hall at 6pm.
