A rare error £2 coin that has never been seen by experts is being sold online via eBay for £2000.

The coin was originally minted and released in 2022 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the FA Cup.

As is the case with all £2 coins, this coin is bi-metallic with a standard gold-coloured ring around a silver-coloured centre.

However, this rare coin has accidentally been minted with one type of metal, making it appear one colour.

The commemorative coin features a depiction of the FA Cup trophy and has the dates 1871-1872 and 2021-2022.

It is also being sold in its original Royal Mint packaging, increasing the value of the incredibly rare item.

The owner has listed the £2 coin on eBay and given it an asking price of £2000.

The description of the coin reads: “Rare Mono Error Coin 2022 FA Cup £2 Royal Mint Coin Bunc.

“Rare error straight from the mint this mono £2 coin is basically all gold missing the silver bit. Never seen another."

Collin Bellamy, owner of the Coin Hunter website said of the FA Cup item: “I think it’s a great find – single metal £2 coin errors are very rare.

“What adds to the appeal here is the subject matter and the fact it passed inspection at The Royal Mint to be sealed in a pack and sent out to a customer.”

Coins made with mistakes are often very valuable due to how rare they are.

However, a warning has been issued over fakes with hunters being told to do their research before handing over cash.

The Royal Mint has been contacted to comment on the rare find.
