THOUSANDS of people have still not signed up to vote in the Oxford East constituency.

And the number of people registered to vote in the area has dropped than 40 per cent in some Oxford City Council wards since November.

Despite efforts by the city council to sign more voters up there are only 2,321 people registered in Holywell, down from 4,131 in November 2014.

The 44 per cent decline in the ward is the largest in Oxford East, with a 28 per cent decrease in Carfax and a 22 per cent drop in Headington Hill and Northway.

The figures were obtained by the Green Party from the council’s electoral register.

The November figures represent people who were registered under the old system, where one person in a house could sign up everyone else in the property.

Under that system universities could sign up students who lived in halls and colleges. Now every voter must register individually.

Green Party prospective parliamentary candidate for Oxford East Ann Duncan said she was concerned by the decline in voters and said the party had written to the city council to ask it to do more to get people to register.
